LATVIA ESC 2009 - Intars Busulis - Sastregums (2.Semi Final)

Intars Busulis was born on May 2nd in Talsi, where he also got his first music education by graduating Talsi’s School of music, the class of trombone. On the whole he was kind of a hardworking kid – studied in the school of music, danced in a folk dance ensemble, even tried himself in shooting and spent a lot of time drawing caricatures. His first official debut was a performance with the vocal ensemble „Talsu Spridisi” while studying in the Talsi School of Music.
After graduating he packed up and moved to Ventspils to continue studies in Music College and play trombone in „Ventspils bigband”, conducted by Ziedonis Zaikovskis. In 1999, he launched boy band “Caffe” with Raimonds Tigulis. Four years later, he went solo in order to find a musical style of his own. During the same period, he also played in the National Armed Forces brass band and jazz group “Wet point”. Intars eclectic musical odyssey is an ongoing endeavour. He’s performed in jazz festivals in Lithuania, Estonia and France (MIDEM) and in 2005, he joined Danish bass guitarist Erik Mosuholm’s project, E.Y.J.O., as a vocalist and trombonist. Intars has participated in jazz festivals in Lithuania (Kaunas Jazz), Estonia (Nomme Jazz, Jazz Kaar), France (MIDEM), Finland (Pori Jazz) Canada (Otawa Jazz) and, of course, Latvia (Sony Jazz Stage), in several musicales - „Notre Dame de Paris” (2007), „Autoplantet”, directed by Latvian musicians Martins Freimanis and Karlis Anitens (2005), „Mass” (a musical created by Leonard Bernstain) (2007), and performed in the projects directed by a producer company „Virus Art” Cabaret („Cabaret” (2004), „Kino Cabaret” (2005), „Cabaret Allez” (2006), „Cabaret plin, plin ...” (2007)) and „Viva la bomba” together with such musicians as Aija Vitolina, Laimis Racenajs, Uldis Marhilevics etc. Intars relishes the chance to perform together with Maestro Raimonds Pauls whose fame extends across Russia. It was Pauls who recommended that Intars should represent Latvia in the “New Wave” competition (Grand prix (2005)). Since winning the competition, Intars has been an annual guest of the competition which has given him the chance to perform with the cream of Russia’s young musical stars.
"I often get asked about the competition feelings. Yes, I admit, I like taking part in different contests. I consider that to be a great experience and a possibility to meet new people, get new impressions. It doesn’t matter if I don’t agree with those people or we think different, the point is – it’s great to see how different we all can be while doing the same thing", says Intars. Besides three Eurovision preselections and New Wave he took part in such contests as Sony Jazz Stage (Grand prix (2004)) and International Contest in Parnu (Grand prix (2004)). In 2008, Intars along with composer Karlis Lacis released his first solo album with original songs in Russian and Latvian. He performed songs from the album in concerts across Latvia. For months, one of his songs, “Brivdiena” topped the radio and TV charts. In 2009, he’s already received several important Latvian musical awards and is working on a new solo album in English. This year, Intars and Sweetwaterz won the Eurovision National Competition with the song, Probka (Traffic jam). In 2006, Intars finished second performing Karlis Lacis’ and Sergejs Timofejevs’ hit, “Gonki”.
You can listen to Sastregums here and it's Russian version Probka here (lyrics by Sergey Timofeyev). During the live broadcast of the show Intars confirmed that he will not be performing in Latvian language in Moscow. He preferred not to name the language of performance, but as LTV has confirmed to ESCKaz, song will be performed in Russian in Moscow. "Probka" (Traffic Jam) is considered by musician as sequel to Gonki (Races), one of his previous Eirodziesma entries. “I read comments on the Internet, and there are different opinions on whether I should sing in Latvian or other language. It is very difficult to understand what is the preferrable opinion of people and I'm not certain whether I should agree with it. There is a bit of egoism too," said the singer, whose song, “Sastregums” was originally in Latvian. "But I am not a cosmopolite; I am a real Latvian patriot. The main thing is that I know what is inside my soul," he said."Traffic jam of hundred kilometers length - this is very painful but usual event for every citizen of Moscow - says author of Russian lyrics Sergey Timofeev. - And in philosophical sense everyone will understnd the song: economics have stopped, we're deep in the crisis, can not move, stay is social jam. Song is about the phenomenon that has touched all of us". Timofeev admits that for Eurovision song is ruther difficult in structure, it is mix of pop, rock and lyrics. Russian version is based on a love story. A man, stuck in a traffic jam, sees the dream-girl, easily passing congestion jumping on tops of cars. He can not believe his eyes, but tears his pants and starts to follow her, travelling on the roofs of cars.

Lyrics:

The traffic jam!

Everyone’s tired.

That’s how it is!

Gloomy faces,

madness –

I have to be the first to get through!

The four-wheeled

steel-boxes

are stuck

everywhere.

And all of a sudden,

I see a girl up there,

Jumping from roof to roof.

Jumping just like that –

From mercedes to volvo.

I rub my eyes –

it could be an illusion –

Until my eyes start to hurt.

Hey, take me up there with you!

I’m tired of giving up,

I want to be a bumper walker,

What’s holding me back?

I don’t know who you are,

I just want to walk next to you.

I want to see how the wind bends the bushes

Down there, at the side of the road.

What the hell?!

Flipping fingers at me

From the window!

I’ll get you, they say,

I’ll get you…

But I just jump and I hop.

Jumping, pants tearing,

but no matter.

On and on –

whatever it takes!

I’m breathing hard,

СО2

My head is spinning..

It’s no joke –

Jumping from mercedes to volvo.

Your silhouette is flickering

Far in the distance.

Hey, take me up there with you!

I’m tired of giving up,

I want to be a bumper walker,

What’s holding me back?
