Soraya Arnelas Rubiales was born on the 13 of September 1982 in Valencia de Alcantara (Extremadura). At the age of 11, she left for Madrid. She wanted to study drama but soon started working as a flight attendant in Iberwood Airlines and Air Madrid Lineas Aereas, where she travelled around the world, learning during the work English, French and Portuguese languages. Soraya participated in the fourth series of the Spanish television series Operacion Triunfo in 2005 where she came second overall. Her debut album "Corazon De Fuego" (Fire Heart) was released on December 5, 2005 produced by Kike Santander. The album got Platinum status, selling in more than 100 000 copies, stayed 11 weeks in top 10 and 21 weeks in top 40 of Spanish charts. On November 21st 2006, Soraya released her second album "Ochenta's". It was her first English language album. The first single was a cover of Laura Branigan's Self Control. The remainder of the album was a mixture of 80s cover versions and new songs. The song reached Gold Status in the Promusicae Digital Songs charts and peaked at number 1 on the Spanish Cadena 100. Singles from this albums has been released in France, Portugal and Andorra. Soraya released another album with more 80's hits, titled "Dolce Vita". The album includes songs of Kylie Minogue's "I Should Be So Lucky", Cyndi Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun", Eurythmics's "Sweet Dreams" and the lead single, "Dolce Vita", a cover from the Italian singer Ryan Paris. The album shot straigh inside the Spanish Top 5 Albums Chart, peaking at #5, and getting Gold certificacion in the following weeks.Sin Miedo was Soraya's fourth released album. Leaving the 80's covers behind, this album contains 12 original tracks; 10 in Spanish and 2 in English. The album was produced by International DJ DJ Sammy and includes a duo with Kate Ryan (the song Caminare). The album debuted on the Spanish Albums Chart at a low #21, on its second week, dropping to #43. However, Soraya has decided to enter a song from this album, La Noche Es Para Mi to Spanish Eurovision preselection.La noche es para mi (The night is for me) has the quality of being a song specially written to please a wide range of European tastes. On the one hand, it is connected to western pop sounds, with a musical dance base which is always a point of reference in the history of the Eurovision Song Contest. Soraya’s song also includes a mixture of ethnic sounds. There is a great deal of mixed music, particularly Latin sounds, thanks to the strains of the Spanish guitar, it is also reminiscent of eastern music and sounds typical of Scandinavian and Eastern European countries. Another important element are the lyrics of the song, which combine on a 50-50 basis the strong characteristics of Spanish with the chorus sung in English, thus giving the song a clear international character.
It appears that before song landed with Soraya, it has been suggested to the several other singers. There is original demo version in Greek circulating online, which was recorded by one of the composers, Irini Michals, another demo version in Greek has been recorded by singer Chryspa, and first English demo version (different lyrics) has been sung by Sofia Berntson.
